Sri Lanka on track to meet September target - WHO Chief

Commends Sri Lanka’s jab drive
AZ second dose administration successfully underway

In a tweet on Monday (2), Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that Sri Lanka is on track to fully vaccinate 10 per cent of the country’s population ahead of the vaccine equity September target.

“Glad to see that Sri Lanka is on track to fully vaccinate 10 percent of its population ahead of the Vaccine Equity September target! Thanks to the Government and people of Sri Lanka for their efforts, and continued vigilance on proven public health and social measures to suppress the virus,” the WHO Director-General tweeted.

Sri Lanka is successfully continuing its vaccination drive against the COVID pandemic and has jabbed over 12,331,868 people across the country.

Over 69,000 people were administered the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on the first day Sunday.

As per the statistics of the Health Ministry, a total number of 69,266 people got the vaccine on Sunday.So far, 455,151 people have got the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine and 925,242 people received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

An accelerated drive is underway to administer the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the Colombo and Gampaha Districts.

A 24-hour vaccination centre has been opened at the Vihara Maha Devi Park while the jab is also being administered in 76 other locations.

Around 20,000 persons got the second dose in the first 24 hours at this centre.

Meanwhile, the first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine has been given to 8,0770,72 people and the second dose has been administered to 1,785,041 individuals.

A total of 159,081 individuals have received the first dose of the Russia-made Sputnik V vaccine and the second dose has been administered to 14,503 persons. The first dose of the Pfizer vaccine has been given to 201,495 persons and 713,659 individuals have received the Moderna vaccine (first dose).
