Protest over quarry in Habaraduwa

A protest was held against the issuance of a permit for a quarry near the Angulugaha Atamassa Kanda Forest Hermitage in Habraduwa.

The protestors said that Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) and Central Environmental Bureau (CEB) Officers together with the Imaduwa Assistant Divisional Secretary visited the area for issuing a permit to carry out the granite industry at the site on Friday.

The Atamassa Kanda Rock, about 100 metres from the Southern Expressway, had been quarried on an earlier occasion as well. It was halted due to a protest by the people of the area.

They claimed that if the permit is granted, it will severely affect the area.
