The separator tanks containing furnace oil at the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery under the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) overflowed in the heavy rainfall. The Navy and Sri Lanka Coast Guard removed the furnace oil from the environment to prevent the oil from spreading on June 4.

Heiyanthuduwa in Sapugaskanda was flooded in heavy rains and the overflowed furnace oil in Sapugaskanda could have been mixed in the Kelani River through the Pattivila Canal as the rainfall decreases and the water level of the Kelani river subsides.

Therefore, the Navy and Coast Guards placed a floating component to prevent the furnace oil from spreading and removed the oil with a skimmer since the oil could have an adverse impact on the water distribution of the Ambatale and the Biyagama Water Treatment Plants.
