Sachini wins pole vault in style at Athletic Trials

Sachini Perera of Sri Lanka Army produced a fine performance to win the Women’s pole vault with an effort of 3.50m on the second day of the National Athletics Trials, worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday.

Although she won the event, this was a below performance from the star athlete considering the fact that she established a new record of 3.56m at the previous Nationals.

K. L. K. L. Perera of Air Force was placed second with 3.30m.

Meanwhile Soldier Tharindu Dasun with a distance of 2.11m won the Men’s high jump event and the second place went to B. R. I. Udaya Kumara (Army) with a distance of 2.08m.

Two athletes from Army, S. M. A. M. P. Saparamadu and S. D. K. Silva finished with an equal distance of 44.69m after a tough competition in the Men’s discus throw event. S. P. J. T. Bandula also from Army finished with a distance of 44.35m.

Meanwhile, the Men’s junior triple jump event was won by Pasindu Malshan with a performance of 15.50m while Wishmitha Kumara was placed second with 15.24m.

Sadini Kaveesha and Lakshani Dissanayake won the first and second places respectively in the Women’s junior long jump event with an equal distance of 5.40m.

The Women’s discus throw event was won by P. A. I. M. P. Perera of Navy who recorded a distance of 41.78m while Heshani Maheshika came in second place with 40.53m.

The Men’s high jump event was won by Tharindu Dushan of Army with a distance of 2.11m while B. R. I. Udaya Kumara won the second place with a performance of 2.08m.

Today is the final day of the trials and the key event will be the Men’s and Women’s 200m finals.
