Dambulla Police on Thursday night seized a coconut oil container at the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre (DEC) on a tip off. Police said coconut oil was being unloaded from the container when the Police reached the place.

The Police in a form of a ‘B’ report informed Dambulla Acting Magistrate Niluka Wijethilake about the questionable coconut oil container yesterday morning.

The Acting Magistrate ordered the Police to refer the coconut oil samples to the Industrial Technology Institute and obtain a report.

Public Health Inspector Priyantha De Silva said that the container was sealed and samples would be taken on Monday.

He said that due to the long weekend they did not have sufficient time to send the samples to Colombo. Matale District Food and Medicine Inspector M. L. Jayaweera said that this coconut oil container has been imported from the Phillipines and it contained 50,000 kilogrammes of coconut oil.

When this stock is taken out of the harbour, the importer should produce the quality assurance report.
