Tomorrow declared a national day of mourning

The Government has declared tomorrow as a ‘National Mourning Day’ in view of the final rites of the late Chief Prelate of Amarapura Sect, Most Venerable Kotugoda Dhammawasa Thera.

In addition, all the slaughterhouses, meat and fish shops, liquor shops and liquor selling centers of the Colombo district will be closed tomorrow.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa presented a Cabinet paper on Tuesday for the above measures considering the great service rendered to the nation, religion and sasana by the Thera, and it was approved by Cabinet.

National Day of Mourning declared today:

The Government has declared today as a National Day of Mourning in view of the final rites of the late Chief Prelate of the Amarapura Sect, Most Venerable Kotugoda Dhammawasa Mahanayake Thera. In addition, all slaughterhouses, meat and fish shops, liquor shops and liquor selling centres in the Colombo district will be closed today.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa presented a Cabinet Paper on Tuesday for the above measures considering the great service rendered to the nation, religion and Sasana by the Mahanayake Thera, and it was approved by the Cabinet.

Late Supreme Prelate of Amarapura Sect, Dharmapala Wanshalankara, Saddarma Keerthi, Sri Tripitaka Vageeshwara, Prawachana Keerthi Sri Sasana Sobana Sri Sumangala Vidyawathasa, Most Venerable Agga Maha Panditha Mahopadya Kotugoda Dhammawasa Thera passed away on March 22 at the age of 88 while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.

The cremation will be held with full State Honours at 4.00 pm at Independence Square, Colombo today on the instructions of the President, Prime Minister and the Buddhist Affairs Department.
