All schools across the island for all grades will reopen on Monday except for schools in the Western Province (WP), Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said.

He added that WP schools will be reopened only after the health recommendations are received.

The Minister further said that health recommendations pertaining to the WP will be submitted by the health officials within two days. Accordingly, schools in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara will be reopened afterwards.

Minister Peiris said the decision on reopening WP schools will be determined based on the approval of the Director General of Health Services.

“The Ministry of Education is committed to providing the necessary facilities and educational environment for children to continue their activities without wasting their valuable time. The GCE Ordinary Level Examination is currently underway, with 622,000 students sitting for it. We were able to successfully conduct and complete the GCE Advanced Level Examination and the Grade Five Scholarship Examination in the same manner,” he added.

The Minister also said that during the examination period, 56 infected students were identified and they were directed to the relevant centres.

“There are 40 such centres throughout the country. A special classroom had been set up at each examination centre and 321 quarantined students sat for the examination,” he said.

He also said that the Government and the Education Ministry have planned all these very successfully with foresight. He added that answer sheets of the first three days of the G.C.E O/L Examination are ready to be evaluated with the aim of releasing the results in June. Advanced Level classes will start in July.
