SL records highest university admissions since Independence

The country has recorded its highest number of university admissions since its Independence, this year, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunga said. He added that state universities had admitted 41,000 students by Tuesday.

The UGC accepted its highest university enrollment this year and incorporated 10,588 students into its system in line with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ Policy. The President had instructed the UGC in 2020 to increase the university intake from 31,000 to 43,000.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed University Vice-Chancellors and the UGC to raise the funds necessary for infrastructure development in order to accommodate the additional 10,588 students.

Prof. Sampath Amaratunga said that an additional Rs.5 billion would be required to manage physical and human resources in the university system.
