Sports Minister presents proposal for high-performance centre to Pakistan PM

The Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa handed over a proposal for the construction of a high-performance sports centre to the visiting Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan yesterday.

The event took place when the Pakistan Premier was hosted for a banquet at the Lotus Room of the Shangri La Hotel in Colombo.

The proposed high-performance centre constructed at Kirimandala Mawatha will focus purely on throwing and jumping field events and it will also feature a state-of-the-art sports analytics centre along with a sports science laboratory.

The proposed high-performance centre aims to be a hub in the nation as well as the region for high-performance athletes who aim to compete at the highest level in global sport events.

Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa hosted the Pakistan Premier Imran Khan in honour of his achievements both on the field of sports as well as for his success in his political career.

The others present on this occasion were Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Cabinet and State Ministers, former Ministers of Sports along with prominent sporting personalities past and present including legendary national cricketers who had the honour of playing against the Pakistan Prime Minister during his illustrious cricketing career.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Prime Minister said that he would allocate a sum of Pakistan Rs. 52 million towards the development of sports infrastructure facilities in Sri Lanka.

He gave this assurance when he met his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa during a bilateral discussion held in Colombo on Tuesday.

The Pakistan Prime Minister further assured that his state will increase the number of exchange programmes as well as scholarship programmes allocated to the Sri Lankan youth.
