Economy strong despite global COVID-19 fallout - State Minister

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been able to alleviate the living conditions of the people in this country without passing on the burden of the global economic recession following the COVID-19 epidemic, said State Minister of Mahaweli Zone Canals and Settlement Infrastructure Development Siripala Gamalath.

The State Minister points out that the country has been faced many obstacles in obtaining foreign exchange following the Easter Sunday bomb attacks and the COVID-19 epidemic. In spite of such circumstances, the Government has taken measures to continue the country’s development and infrastructure development.

State Minister Gamalath was addressing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Medirigiriya Electoral Committee meeting held at the Diyasenpura Weekly Fairground recently.

All the party branch office bearers and party activists participated in the Electoral Committee that was held under the patronage of State Minister Gamalath. Addressing the Committee Meeting, the State Minister said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Government have been working to make the people’s aspirations a reality. He also said the benefits of such a programme will be passed on to the people in the near future.

“Even though, the global economy has suffered a severe setback following the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the President and the Government have handled the situation in an admirable manner to lessen the economic burden on the people.

“In addition, measures have been taken to uplift the living conditions of the people by managing the country’s economy. The Government’s commitment to develop the village should be admired. The President has been taking action to find immediate solutions to the peoples’ problems through his ‘Dialogue with the Village’ (Gama Samaga Pilisandara) programme,” he said.

Gamalath said that certain factions are attempting to block the Government’s development plans in the country by disseminating false information and requested the people not to fall prey to these gimmicks.

The State Minister said that a number of programmes will be implemented in 53 Grama Seva Divisions in the Medirigiriya and Lankapura Divisional Secretariat Divisions. Several roads in the Polonnaruwa district will also be rehabilitated under the 100,000 kilometre road rehabilitation programme.

The Chief Incumbents of temples in the area, Trincomalee District MP Kapila Athukorala, Medirigiriya Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Shantha Kumara Wickramarachchi, Elehara Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Janaka Nalin Kumara, Pradeshiya Sabha and SLPP members of the Medirigiriya Electorate participated.
