Main suspect in 2017 Piliyandala shooting arrested in India

A chief suspect in connection with the 2017 shooting attack on Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) officers in Piliyandala has been arrested in India, said Police Media Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana.

DIG Ajith Rohana said that the Indian INTERPOL has officially notified the INTERPOL branch in Sri Lanka regarding the arrest of Mohamed Mahir Mohamed Nawaz.

The suspect is being held in custody in Madhur by India’s Narcotics Control Bureau over a narcotics-related offence.

Several drug traffickers had opened fire on PNB officers on May 9, 2017 including Inspector Neomal Rangajeeva in Piliyandala. A constable was killed and an 11-year-old succumbed to injuries and was pronounced dead after three days in hospital.Four others including IP Neomal Rangajeeva and another police officer and two children sustained injuries in the shooting. The arrested suspect had pretended as an informant to police at the time of the incident. The Western Province Police Division launched an investigation into the incident and have arrested several suspects earlier connected with the incident.

DIG Ajith Rohana said that suspect had fled to India after the shooting. Rohana said measures will be taken to have the suspect brought here under the extradition law.
