Electricity bills will not be increased anytime soon as fabricated by the Opposition to mislead the people, Power Minister Dulles Alahapperuma assured.

As the Power Minister, I assure you this today that no decision has been taken to increase the electricity bill right now, he said after opening a new electricity transmission station at Maho in Kurunegala on January 30.

"Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who was PM on an earlier occasion reduced the electricity bill by 25% by setting up and opening the Norochcholai Power Station. After 2013, no new power supply stations have been established in Sri Lanka,"he said. Next month, we hope to begin the first LNG power station at Kerawalapitiya to produce 300 megawatts in Sri Lanka. When compared to the South Asian countries, Sri Lanka provides electricity to the common people at the lowest prices. However, we are exploring ways of supplying electricity to manufacturers, farmers and factory owners countrywide at lower price rates at present.

"All employees at the CEB are now working with sacrifice and even then, certain criticisms too are reported over malpractices at the CEB by now. As the Minister, I hope to rectify all the existing lapses at the CEB to make that large Government owned institute a profit making venture in the future," Minister Alahapperuma said. Highways Minister Johnston Fernando and CEB Chairman Vijitha Herath were present.
