Daily milk production of NWP to be increased - State Minister Herath

Livestock, Farm Promotion and Dairy and Egg Related Industries State Minister D.B. Herath said it has been planned to increase the daily milk production in the North Western Province (NWP) from 175,000 litres up to 350,000 litres within a few years. The present production of 175,000 litres is only 20 percent of the country’s total production.

He was addressing a press briefing at the auditorium of the Provincial Department of Animal Production and Health on Wednesday.

The State Minister said the dairy industry has the potential to contribute considerably to Sri Lanka’s economy. “As a traditional industry which survived for many years, milk production also plays an important role in alleviating nutritional poverty of all age groups and it is a source of extensive employment opportunities,” he added.

State Minister Herath further said his sole intention is to bring the North Western Province to the first place in milk production of the country under the Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour Policy Manifesto of the government.
