England top order batsman cum test captain Joe Root on Saturday registered 8000 runs in Test cricket in his 98th test match and in his 179th innings. Root achieved the feat on day three of the First Test against England at Galle International Cricket stadium in Galle.

On his way he became the seventh England batsman to achieve the feat. Other England batsmen who scored 8000 runs in Test cricket are Alastair Cook, Graham Gooch, Geoffrey Boycott, Alec Stewart, Kevin Pietersen and David Gower. Test cricket is the ultimate challenge for any cricketer and only batsmen with solid technique and temperament can survive for a long time in this demanding game. In the modern era out of the prolific scorers of Kane Williamson (New Zealand), Steven Smith (Australia) and Virat Kohli (India); Joe root is the first to reach the milestone of scoring 8000 runs in test cricket.
