Southern Province COVID-19 cases climb to 1,667

Sixty-one cases reported on Saturday

COVID-19 patient numbers in the Southern Province rose to 1,667 with the 61 new cases reported last Saturday, Southern Province COVID-19 Information Centre Coordinating Officer Chamara Mahagamage told the Daily News.

Six patients have died of the virus in the Southern Province so far, of which four were from the Galle District and two were from the Matara District. Furthermore, 573 of the coronavirus patients detected in the province were from Matara, while 162 were from the Hambantota District. The cases reported from Galle stand at 932, he added.

Of the cases reported last Saturday, 44 were from Galle, while 17 were from Matara. Thirteen each were detected in the Habaraduwa and Neluwa areas, while five were found in Thawalama. Four were reported from the Galle municipal area, while two each were detected in Imaduwa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, and Weligama, Mahagamage said.

One patient each was reported from the Karandeniya, Rathgama, Poddala, Elpitiya, Akuressa, and Dondra areas, the Coordinating Officer added. He said that at present, 3,720 persons from 1,383 families in the Southern Province are being quarantined. So far, 71,827 PCR tests have been carried out in the province, Mahagamage added.
