Vajira, Range get UNP posts

Ravi absent, Akila Assistant Leader

The United National Party (UNP) Working Committee yesterday appointed new office bearers for 2021.

The UNP Working Committee approved the appointment of former General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam as the Assistant Leader of the party. Palitha Range Bandara was appointed as the new General Secretary and Vajira Abeywardena as the Chairman.

Former deputy leader Ravi Karunanayake was not present at the Working Committee meeting and was not given any post. However, Ravi Karunanayake’s service to the party as the Deputy Leader at a time when the party was in a difficult situation was commended by the Working Committee.

The Working Committee approved all nominations submitted by party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for the party posts for 2021.The Working Committee met under the chairmanship of Wickremesinghe at the Sirikotha party headquarters.

Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene, National Organizer Navin Dissanayake and Treasurer Misbah Sathar remained unchanged.

The appointment of four Vice Presidents is also a special feature.Sagala Ratnayake, DM Swaminathan, Daya Gamage and Sunethra Ranasinghe are the new Vice Presidents. Anoma Gamage has been appointed as the Administrative Secretary and Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku has been appointed as the Secretary of the Research and Policy Planning Development Division.

It is learned that Arjuna Ranatunga had also been nominated for a post in the party and had informed the party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe before the Working Committee meeting that he would inform later whether he would accept it or not. Navin Dissanayake was also not present at the meeting.
