COVAX ready to give vaccines to SL – Health Minister

Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi told Parliament yesterday that the Government is ready to provide a successful vaccine for COVID-19 for 20 percent of the population through the COVAX facility.

Speaking on behalf of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister Wanniarachchi revealed that the Government made the request from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI), the lead partner of COVAX, on July 20 last year for the facility and Sri Lanka is eligible to receive this facility.

Making these observations in response to a query made by MP Upul Galappatti to be asked from the Prime Minister, she added that Covid-19 Vaccine Committee Chairman and Senior Chief Adviser to the President Lalith Weeratunga is fulfilling the legal background to receive the vaccine.

She said further that when the Advisory Committee approved one or more vaccines, they will be imported without delay.
