Rs. 105 million on COVID safety measures at schools – Prof. G.L. Peiris

The Government has spent Rs.105 million on school equipment and materials ensuring the health and safety of schoolchildren, Education Minister G. L. Peiris said.

The Minister said that the sets of equipment that help prevent COVID have been provided now.

He was speaking to the media at a meeting of the Galagerada Electoral Board of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) last Saturday.

The Minister said that the decision to reopen the schools was made by the Ministry after having discussions with the health sector. The Ministry has announced a programme to run schools and teachers of each school should meet from January 4 to 11 to discuss and decide on the measures to be taken to implement the programme, he said.

He said that only schools in isolated areas would be reopened on January 11 and there is no reason to close schools when banks, factories and shops are open.

Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Kandy Coordinating Committee Chairman and Parliamentarian Wasantha Yapa Bandara were present.
