Permits for mining gems will not be issued to those who have not adhered to rules and regulations. Accordingly, those who mine gem in Laggala have not been issued permits, National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NJA) officials said.
According to the rules, permit holders have to fill gem pits they had dug before mining for gem again elsewhere, but certain gem miners had not filled their earlier pits.
Therefore, they had not been issued permits, the NJA officials said.
NJA Naula officials have detected many abandoned pits in the lands along Kandy-Matale-Dambulla Road.
