Request to set up ‘Kannangara Nuwara’ in memory of CWW Kannangara

A resolution urging the Government to establish a Divisional Secretariat known as ‘Kannangara Nuwara’ Divisional Secretariat in the Kalutara District covering Walallawita and a part of Matugama and Weththewa in memory of the late C. W. W. Kannangara, former Matugama Parliamentarian and father of free education, was unanimously adopted at a meeting of the Kalutara District Development Committee held at the Kalutara District Secretariat Auditorium on December 11.

The meeting was presided over by its Chairman Kalutara District Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Sanjeewa Edirimanne. State Minister Jayantha Samaraweera had submitted the resolution to the District Development Committee to be forwarded to the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon to take necessary action.

Parliamentarians and Govt Officials who participated at the Development Committee meeting were satisfied with the suggestion proposed by the State Minister Jayantha Samaraweera.

The late C. W. W. Kannagara was born in Matugama and was the UNP Parliamentarian under the United National Party Government led by the late D. S. Senanayaka.

He was the first Education Minister, who introduced the Free Education Act to provide free education to the students in the country.

So far millions of students had reaped the fruits of free education.

At present most of the voters living in between Matugama and Wallawita had to undergo many difficulties without a Divisional Secretariat, since they have to go to Matugama Divisional Secretariat for their needs.

The resolution was unanimously adopted at the meeting of the Kalutara District Development Committee Kalutara District Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarians Lalith Ellawala and Anupa Pasquel also presented their suggestions regarding the resolution.
