Speedy prosecution for drug abusers from Monday

Police will take action to immediately expedite cases of those who have been arrested for narcotics use.

Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana stated that as a solution to reduce prison congestion, cases are to be expedited against them before next Monday.

This action was taken following an order issued by the Attorney General at the request of the Prisons Minister.

The Inspector General of Police has directed all SSPs, SPs and ASPs and Divisional Crime Investigation Units in Sri Lanka to take immediate action to prosecute those arrested for drug use.

Police said this only applies to suspects arrested while possessing a small amount of narcotics for their own consumption and not to large scale drug traffickers, narcotics distributors and those who have previous offenses related to narcotics.

Accordingly, only those convicted of drug offenses who have committed such minor offenses will be able to plead guilty or seek bail through a motion or a magistrate’s court, if necessary for relief, the police spokesman said.
