Matale Mayor removed

Central Province Governor Lalith U.Gamage has removed Matale Mayor Daljith Aluvihare from his post from Wednesday, following an inquiry into his conduct.

A special gazette notification has been issued, Wednesday announcing the removal of Daljith Aluvihare as Mayor.

The Governor appointed a committee headed by retired Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena to investigate the allegations against the mayor and submit a report within three months, on whether he had committed any wrongdoing under the amended Municipal Council Ordinance.

Judge Weerawardena handed over the report to the Central Province Governor on November 24.

The Governor’s office noted that, based on the contents of the relevant report, there is evidence that the Matale Mayor had committed offenses referred to in Sections 277 (I) (a), (c) (d) and (e) of the Municipal Council Ordinance (Authority 252) while discharging his duties and functions.

The Governor has removed Mayor Daljith Aluvihare from his post as per the powers vested in the Provincial Governor under the Municipal Councils Ordinance.

The mayor was temporarily suspended last August, following a gazette notification by the governor while appointing deputy mayor Sandanam Prakash to carry out the mayor’s duties.
