Anuka Nethsan aims high in sports

15-year-old first eleven player left hand middle order bat, left arm chinamon bowler, safe fielder, all rounder Agas Pathiranhelage Anuka Nethsan Wijewardene performed well during the past for Rajasinghe Madya Maha Vidyalaya, Ruwanwella. He commenced his schooling at Sri Indrarathana Junior School, Galpatha, Ruwanwella when Henry Sarath Kumara was the Principal and his first class teacher was Mrs.Kumari Hami. Since his smaller days he was keen in cricket and played soft ball cricket along with his neighbouring friends.

In 2016 he joined Rajasinghe Madya Maha Vidyalaya Ruwanwella and attended under 13 cricket practices at his new school under Thusitha Annada and in the same year he was selected for the team. In his first year itself he claimed 28 wickets and in the following year he bagged 17 scalps. In 2018 he captained the team and scored 938 runs in 10 outings with 246 runs as the top score versus Sujatha Vidyalaya Rambukkana in 86 balls with 25 sixes and 10 four.

Also he put on a fifth wicket partnership of 253 runs with Lahiru Rukshan who contributed an unbeaten 12 runs. His 246 runs is the second highest score by an under 13 division three cricketer and the highest score being 286 runs. In addition he had three centuries and two fifties and captured 68 wickets with two ten wicket hauls with the best match bag of 11 for 26 (7/19 and 4/7). With these performances under his belt he was selected for the Central Province under 14 cricket team to play against the visiting under 14 cricket team from the Indian Cricket Board. Last year playing in the under 15 team he scored 150 runs in three matches and the top score being 75 runs. Also he was selected to the under 19 team and played in the Big Matches against N. M. Perera Vidyalaya, Yatiyantota in 2018 and 2019. Presently he is attending practices for Colombo Cricket Club in preparation for the Sara Premier Trophy under 23 tournament.

In addition he played for the School volleyball team and represented the under 13 team in 2017 and 2019 where they won the Divisional, Zonal, District, Provincial and qualified for the DSI All Island Tournament and they were the runner-up and Champions respectively.

Also he represented the school in athletics in 2017 and 2018 and in Putt Shot he won at School, Divisional, Zonal, District and sixth in the Provincial Meets. His athletics coach was Mr. Thiwanka and in Volleyball Chamara Jayarathne and Ishara Hnsapriya.
