Solar power for 36,000 households by 2021 November – State Minister Duminda

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa completes his second year of his tenure by November 2021 and electricity will be provided to 36,000 households by that day, Renewable Energy Resources Development State Minister Duminda Dissanayake said.

The State Minister said that already 250 solar systems companies have registered under the State Ministry and the number is growing. These companies will be asked to set up solar power systems on rooftops of State and private enterprises, the State Minister said.

“Nearly 25,000 families have opted for solar power panels now. The Matale District has 539 Grama Niladari Divisions and but only 131 families have solar power systems. Matale, however, has over 160,000 electricity users, he said.

The number of solar power users will be 80 per cent by 2030. The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority is now acquiring suitable land in the Dry Zone, mainly in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, to set up solar power plants. Around 50,000 direct and indirect jobs will be provided in the sector very soon, the State Minister said.

Those who fix rooftops solar power panels could apply to the Sustainable Energy Authority to gain commercial benefits in this regard, the State Minister said.
