e-National Identity Card by 2023

The Government will introduce an e-national identity card under the Unitary Digital Identification Framework. Sri Lanka Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and the Department of Registration of Persons will carry out the project, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

He was speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held online yesterday.

Minister Rambukwella said that the Cabinet has granted its approval for the set of proposals presented by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to implement the project.

The Government is following a unitary digital identity framework and a strategy that facilitates the same for realising the objective of “A Skillful Nation”, which is one of the 10 fundamental objectives of the national policy framework of ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’. The same has been given priority as a national level programme.

The Cabinet approved the Unitary Digital Identification Framework that has been finalised by the Committee entrusted with the planning of the relevant programmes.

Cabinet approval has been granted to establish a Presidential Task Force to assist with the guidance required to set up the unitary digital identification framework.

The Cabinet granted their approval to entrust the responsibility of implementing the Unitary Digital Identification Framework for Sri Lanka to the Sri Lanka Information and Communication Technology Agency.

The project will be finalised by December 31, 2022.
