Abbott and Bopara sign-up with Jaffna Stallions for LPL

Former South Africa seamer, Kyle Abbott and former England batsman, Ravi Bopara are the latest additions to join the Lanka Premier League (LPL) Twenty20 Cricket Tournament, which gets underway later this month.

Abbott (33) and Bopara (35) have signed with the Jaffna Stallions Team ahead of this inaugural 23-match tournament, which begins on November 26 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota.

The two overseas players will join a host of other Sri Lankan stars including, Skipper Thisara Perera, Wanidu Hasaranga, Dhananjaya de Silva and Suranga Lakmal.

Abbott and Bopara, who have been performing consistently in the shortest format of the game until recently, will come out for the first time when they meet the Galle Gladiators in their opening fixture on November 27, under lights.

Both these veteran players will have a combined tally of over 500 T20s under their belt and their presence will be of great value to some of the promising local cricketers of the team, in the calibre of Binura Fernando, Nuwanindu Fernando, Minod Bhanuka and Charith Asalanka. In fact, right-hand middle order batsman Bopara is in good nick having carried his English County side Sussex up to the quarter-finals of the Vitality Blast T20 Cricket Tournament. Bopara of course, was a regular member of the England set-up for several years and he was part of the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) where he represented the Rajasthan Royals and the Sunrisers Hyderabad with distinction.

In addition, he has a vast amount of experience in franchise cricket having also turned out for the Sydney Sixes in the Big Bash League (BBL) and Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Meanwhile, Abbott also continued to play in franchise cricket even after announcing his retirement from international cricket having played his last Test against Sri Lanka at Cape Town in 2017.

Thereafter, the right-arm fast bowler took over a stint with Worcestershire in the English County circuit and later on, he went on to represent Middlesex and Hampshire as well.

In addition, he was part of the champion franchise, Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and turned out for the Kings XI Punjab and Pune Warriors.
