Sithul Wijesekera, an outstanding cricketer of St.Thomas’ College,Matale, started his cricket career in the year 2013. As an opening batsman and a left arm spinner at the age of nine years Sithul played for four years at a stretch in the Under 13 level and showed his class in the year 2017 when he captured 22 wickets for 88 runs in four matches, best being the match bag of 13 wickets for 32 runs as an under 15 player. As a batsman he scored 107 runs in four matches highest score being an unbeaten knock of 32 against Trinity College, Kandy.

In the year 2018 he showed much improvement by capturing 21 wickets and scoring 139 runs in four innings. In the year 2019 he went up on the ladder of success especially in bowling to bag 27 wickets in five matches including three five wicket hauls, his best being claiming five wickets for 8 runs. For his performances he was selected to play for the Provincial Under 15 team and in addition he was selected the Best Bowler out of Ten bowlers in the All Island Under 15 level.

For his performances, Sithul Wijesekera was invited to play for the Under 15 League tourney in Yorkshire, United Kingdom to play Twenty matches but due to Covid -19 he was unable to accept this invitation.

In the meantime he was selected for the Under 15 development squad and for the World Cup under 19 tournaments to be held in 2022 and 2024. Their training is held under Tim Maccskill of Australia with Sri Lankan Coaches like Roy Dias, Ravindra Pushpakumara, Sumithra Warnakulasuriya , Dhammika Sudarshana and Sachith Pathirana with selectors like Ranjan Paranavithana and Ranjith Madurusinghe supporting them

Sithul is not only a cricketer but an outstanding student of St.Thomas’ who obtained ‘A’ in eight subjects to go on for higher studies. While going on with his studies, his ambition is to play for Sri Lanka in future and he is grateful to his Coach B.K.Mahinda of Matale. Although Matale City is famous for Hockey St.Thomas College,Matale has produced outstanding cricketers like Chanaka Welagedara, Lahiru Madhushanka, Leslie Abeyasinghe, Saman Senanayake , Ajith de Silva, Shavendra Silva(present Army Commander) and B.K.Mahinda to name a few. If Sithul Wijesekera is able to fulfil his ambition of playing for Sri Lanka then cricketers of St.Thomas’ Matale will be encouraged to play the game seriously.
