‘Minipe Canal Project to be completed by next year’

Construction work to increase the Minipe anicut’s upstream capacity by raising it by 3.5m under the Minipe Left Bank Canal Rehabilitation Project (MLBCRP) will be completed within the next year, Project Senior Communication Officer Isuru Eranga said. He added that nearly 50% of the construction work is already finished.

Despite the prevailing pandemic situation in the country, the project team had continued the constructions following strict health guidelines. The total cost for the construction is Rs. 2.14 billion, Eranga said.

The MLBCRP was launched in 2016, and the majority of the construction work is complete. This includes the renovation of 56 canals, the spill gates, and one phase of the Minipe canal, he added.
