Bid to revive billiards in Kandy

Billiards and snooker has a long and rich history stretching from its inception, but today in Kandy no one cares for the cue sport, Billiards and snooker has taken a nose dive in Kandy. There are no tournaments unlike those days. In the past there were inter-club matches, but now such tournaments are not heard of. In the early days clubs like Kings Cue Club, Catholic Club, Lawn Club, Public Service Club, Mahanuwara YMBA, Kandy YMMA, Kandy Garden Club, Kandy Club and Peradeniya Faculty Club took to the game seriously and the tournaments were a great recreation to many cueists in the evenings. Today only theMahanuwara YMBA and Public Services Club keep the game going. However, billiards and snooker, which has been in the doldrums for many years, looks as if it is bound to come alive again as some of the past players are making elaborate plans to revive it again.

At one time the most looked forward to tournament was the Kandy District‘Lanka Plate’ Billiards and Snooker championships, organized by the Sri Lanka Billiards and Snooker Association with Kandy Billiards and Snooker Association supporting it in a big way.

This should be said that M. J. Marzook Wahid, a resident of Mahaiyawa went on to represent Sri Lanka at the World championship in Canada and was the first to do so from Kandy, then there were cueists R .Letchuman also from Mahaiyawa he played in overseas tournaments, Tuany Amidon from Katukelle, Abdul Razak too from Katukelle, Faiz Samad were top cuiests.

Kandy Lawn Club was famous for the game, where doctors, government servants and lawyers took the game to the top level this club which was housed at the premises of the present D.S. Senanayake Library gave a big hand for the game and some of the players were Dr. C.D.L. Fernando, Parakrama Ranasinghe, Jadi Silva, S.Sangakkara, M. Vanderput, S.B. Karaliyadde, Abdul Razak, M. Jabar and Mohideen Shah to name a few. This club does not exist any more; the Police had a top player called D.B. Ekanayake.
