First contempt of court case against Ranjan Ramanayake fixed for Nov. 6

The first contempt of court case filed against Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake was today re-fixed for November 6 by Supreme Court.
 
Supreme Court three-judge-bench comprising Justice Sisira de Abrew, Justice Vijith Malalgoda and Justice Preethi Padman Surasena fixed the matter for November 6 to be taken up for further clarifications.
 
President's Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran appearing for the respondent Ramanayake had moved for a further date since he is attending parliament sessions. 
 

UPDATE: First contempt of court case against Ranjan re-fixed for Nov. 6

The first contempt of court case filed against Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake was yesterday re-fixed for November 6 by Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court three-judge-bench comprising Justice Sisira de Abrew, Justice Vijith Malalgoda and Justice Preethi Padman Surasena fixed the matter for November 6 to be taken up for further clarifications.

President’s Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran appearing for the respondent Ramanayake had moved for a further date since he was attending Parliamentary sessions.

The Supreme Court has already reserved its judgement in the contempt of court case filed against MP Ranjan Ramanayake for allegedly scandalizing the judiciary by making statements to the media.

Both prosecution and respondent parties have already concluded testifying evidence in connection with this contempt of court case. All judges of the Supreme Court had earlier determined to proceed with contempt of court charges against the former Deputy Minister after perusing the transcript of the video footage pertaining to the alleged derogatory statement.

Ven. Magalkande Sudantha Thera and R. Sunil Perera, a retired Air Force Officer had made complaints to the Supreme Court seeking a contempt of court action against the then Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake for allegedly making insulting remarks on the reputation of the judiciary and lawyers, at a press conference held on August 21 last year.

President’s Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran with Senior counsel Viran Corea appeared for the respondent. Additional Solicitor General Sarath Jayamanne with Senior State Counsel Suharshi Herath Jayaweera appeared for the Attorney General.
