Long distance bus operators take passengers for ride

Long distance bus operators on the A6 and A9 routes in the Matale district park their buses for about half an hour at restaurants, passengers complained.

Bus drivers and conductors will be provided with food and drinks free to stop their buses at the restaurants, they said.

The restaurant owners cover the cost of meals given to the bus drivers and conductors by charging high rates from the passengers. The restaurants, too, are very dirty and passengers are infected with various illnesses after eating from these hotels, they said.

Some drivers drink alcohol from these restaurants and drive their buses, they said.

A strict action should be taken by the authorities to stop the drivers and conductors from indulging in these reckless activities, they said.
