Minor export crops to be promoted

The Export Agriculture Department has initiated measures to promote the cultivation of minor export crops in Sri Lanka.

According to project instructors, cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, cocoa, ensal, coffee and several other minor agricultural crops are to be expanded at district level. The total number of hectares to be brought under these new cultivation projects would be over 2,000. These crops are successfully being cultivated in over 14 districts in Sri Lanka. Cinnamon is mainly cultivated in the Southern region and some parts of the Kalutara, Ratnapura and Badulla districts while pepper, cocoa, cloves, cardamom and nutmeg are grown in selected areas in the districts of Kandy, Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Kurunegala and Monaragala.

“The export of over 60,000 metric tons of the capacity of yield productions of export agricultural crops by the year 2021 would be anticipated,” officials added.
