Paradise regained!

To mark World Tourism Day, a walk under the theme “Our Village is the Paradise” started from Kallady Bridge up to Kallady beach along the Saravana Road for the first time on September 27.

The meeting which commenced with traditional cultural items of Batticaloa was organized by the Sri Lanka Institute of Advance Technological Education in collaboration with the Youth Federation of the Manmunai North Division and the Batticaloa Tourism Development Association. It was funded by the Children’s Emergency Relief International.

The Batticaloa Municipal Council Mayor Thiagaraja Saravanapavan emphasized that by developing tourist spots in Batticaloa the livelihood of the individuals will improve. To start the proposal, the floating restaurant along the Batticaloa lagoon was examined. Other aspects of tourist interest in the lagoon were also inspected.

“Through such iniciatives, we can contribute to the promotion of tourism which brings 25 percent of the National revenue,” he said.

Sri Lanka Institute of Advance Technological Education Batticaloa Coordinator S Jeyabalan said that with the minimum resources at their command, 60 students had been trained in the Tourism and Hospitality Management Trade and set out to earn a living sum. Some of them are earning Rupees 100,000 per month by training youth. This should be increased for others to follow.

The Batticaloa Government Agent Kalamathy Pathmaraja noted that World Tourism Day was declared in 1980 by the United Nation. In Sri Lanka tourism develops with the rural background there by giving more opportunities for the rural folk to earn a living. By developing rural products and by making them the villagers can increase their means of livelihood.

Team leader Skills for Inclusive Growth David Albert, Eastern province Tourism Bureau Chairman Hari Prathap, CERI Coordinator V Dharsan, Assistant Director of Batticaloa District Youth Services Council Kalitheen Ameer and Batticaloa District Project Coordinator S Marina graced the occasion.
