3,600 families to be evacuated from landslide high-risk zones: Nimal

One of the challenges authorities concerned have to face when it comes to carrying out programmes for the resettlement of families living in places prone to natural disasters is to find lands for them.

Talking about the process of evacuating people living in areas around Badulla that are prone to natural disasters such as landslides, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva added that there about 3,600 families to be evacuated from places currently prone to landslides and other natural disasters.

The Minister of Labour said in Badulla recently that authorities concerned about the issue need to find at least 36,000 perches of land, calculating that each family is given a plot of 10 perches in order for their resettlement, and therein lies the crux of the matter.

Finding land for families to be evacuated is not that easy, and the matter has a great impact on bringing the process of evacuating families living in the areas prone to natural disasters to resettle in safe places to an end, the minister said.

That prolonged delay in dealing with certain issues related to disaster relief in Badulla has occurred not for the lack of political will, but for reasons unavoidable, the minister added.
