Number of people seeking shelter at Elders’ Homes on the rise

Wayamba Provincial Director of Social Services Marie Fernando said that the number of elders seeking shelter at Elders’ Homes is increasing day by day.

At present, there are 300 male and female Elders in 20 Elders’ Homes in the Kurunegala District and 151 elders in three Elders’ Homes in the Puttalam District.

“These elders have lost the love and affection of their children. There are elders from well-to-do families, too. Some children are in the habit of abandoning their parents in bus stands and other public places. This is a very sad state of affairs,” Fernando said.

“Children should be taught from a very young age the value and importance of caring for their elderly parents,” she added.
