SLMC against 20A - Hakeem

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader and Kandy District MP Rauf Hakeem said the SLMC will seek court intervntion against the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

He was responding to a question posed by a journalist after a function in Madawala, Kandy.

Hakeem said if there were anomalies in the 19th Amendment they should be rectified instead of bringing in a new Amendment.

Stating that the 19th Amendment incorporated a number of positive features while promoting democracy, Hakeem said these should be preserved.

“Getting the 19A right is not a problem. But bringing a new Amendment with wider powers to the President cannot be accepted. This could create a situation where the executive will get more powers going even beyond what happened during the J.R.Jayewardene era. We think a two-thirds majority is not enough and a referendum may be needed to pass such legislation. So as a party we decided that we should seek the opinion of the courts,” he added.
