Buses, office, school vans to take left lane today

Bikes, tuks off priority lane:

The recently implemented Bus Priority Lane in Colombo will be only for the use of passenger transport buses, office and school transport services, Police media spokesperson SSP Jaliya Senaratne said.

He said that three wheelers and motorcycles will not be permitted to use the bus lane from today.

Speaking to the media at the Police headquarters yesterday SSP Senaratne said three wheelers and motorcycles can use the outer lane, preferably the second lane. He also added that when using the BPL, passengers must board and disembark only at bus halts and not to get down elsewhere other than in stops.

SSP Senaratne said buses can enter the outer lane to overtake another bus if a bus is stopped to board or disembark a passenger. Or else the outer lane is strictly prohibited for buses.

Moreover he stressed the motorcyclists to stick to relevant lanes and refrain from overtaking vehicles in an erratic manner.

And also he added that re-implementation of traffic lane laws have contributed in reducing the heavy traffic congestion and road accidents.

He also said that as the first step, drivers who violate the traffic lane regulations will be highly advised and the police will keep notes to mark if further violated. By yesterday around 1000 drivers have violated the regulations, he added.
