Parliament staffer arrested for bribe further remanded

The Parliament Goods Receiving Officer, who was arrested by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) while allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs 60,000 from a fruit supplier, was further remanded till September 29 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Mohomed Mihail.

When the matter was taken up, the Bribery Commission officials informed Court that the arrest was made in Kaduwela, when the suspect was allegedly accepting the bribe from a fruit supplier.

Bribery officials informed the Magistrate that they are carrying out further investigations through CCTV footage.

The suspect had allegedly solicited a bribe of Rs.30, 000 per month from a businessman not to reject his supplies and ensure that he would continuously get the order," Bribery officials alleged.

The officials further told Court that the plaintiff had lodged a complaint with the CIABOC on August 20. The suspect was identified as a resident of Kaduwela.

The suspect had asked the businessman to come to Kaduwela with the arrears for January and February.
