Ranil to hang up by December

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to appoint his successor by December expecting that the Provincial Council election will be held in March next year.

Wickremesinghe at a meeting with senior party leaders at his office had said that the provincial council election may take place in the first quarter of the next year after the adoption of 20th Amendment to the Constitution and a new leader should be appointed to prepare the party for an election. The UNP leader has expressed his dislike to hang on to the leadership any longer as he has personal matters to attend.

Wickremesinghe has told them he wants to have some rest as he plans to write several books. He has also commended the efforts taken by former Parliamentarian Vajira Abeywardena to protect the unity of the party during the election of Deputy Leader of the party. Abeywardena had told the working committee that leader of the party should be allowed to appoint the Deputy Leader of the party without an election.
