Katana water supply project expedited

Water Supply Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara yeserday ordered the Water Supply and Drainage Board to expedite the Katana Water Supply project

This project commenced in 2012 on the directive of then President Mahinda Rajapaksa using water of the Maha Oya.

“The Gampaha district is the most populated district in the country. Relying on wells for potable water may become a health hazard due to the density of the population,” he said.

People living in Katana North, Central and South regions in the Katana DS area are facing an acute shortage of drinking water. Pipe-borne water has not been supplied to this area.

Residents said pipe borne water has been provided to some areas but water is supplied to these households only for a few hours daily.

Over 40 Grama Niladhari divisions in the DS division are covered by this project costing Rs.11, 795 million. The project is funded by the China Development Bank and the Bank of Ceylon

It is expected to provide 20,000 new supplies under this project.
