Navy nab group for illegal fishing

Naval personnel apprehend a group along with fishing gear for illegal fishing.

The North Central Naval Command, during operations in the sea areas north of Talaimannar, Kuduirrippu and Palleimunai, apprehended 25 persons in fishing with banned nets. Six dinghies, banned nets and over 1,750kg of illegally caught fish were held by the Navy. The Navy nabbed another five persons in scuba-diving without valid licence. The operation seized two dinghies and several sets of diving gear.

The Northern Naval Command during in the Old Casurina Beach in Karainagar, held two suspects while they were carrying two sea turtles alive by a three-wheeler.

The suspects have been identified as residents of Talaimannar, Mannar and Karainaga. The accused along with seized items were handed over to the Assistant Director and Fisheries Inspector of Mannar and Kayts Police.
