Walalawita PS passes resolution: Requests Govt. to abolish PC system

A Resolution requesting the Government to abolish the Provincial Councils was adopted with a majority of 21 votes at the Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha monthly meeting in the Kalutara District.

The resolution requests to appoint nine Ministers for the Provinces. The meeting held on Tuesday at the Council auditorium was presided over by Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Athukorala.

Six UNP Councillors, 11 Councillors of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, two Councillors of the Eksath Nidahas Sandanaya, one Councillor each from the JVP and the Eksath Jathika Nidahas Sandanaya voted in favour of the resolution tabled by Nalaka Tharanga Samarawickrama.

Addressing the meeting, Athukorala said the Provincial Councils were unable to solve important problems in the respective provinces.

“Those Councils had become a white elephant destroying public funds.

The Government should abolish the Provincial Council system because the majority of the people and the politicians were against it. The Government should instead appoint nine Ministers to the respective Provinces,” he added.

Councillor Lakmal Gunatathna of Eksath Janatha Nidahas Sandanaya abstained from voting. Sangeva Kalugala Arachchige of the SLPP was not present. The Chairman pronounced the resolution was adopted. No councillor voted against.
