Conman arrested while impersonating cop

A person who impersonated a police officer and robbed motorists’ money while checking their bags was remanded until September 29 by Mount Lavinia Magistrate Udesh Ranathunga, on Tuesday.

The suspect has been identified as a 34-year-old resident of Dompe, Piliyandala. He had stolen money from motorcyclists at the Attidiya ‘Temple Junction’.

When police questioned him at the scene, the suspect had said that he was attached to the Moratuwa Police. Police had apprehended him on-site and also seized 1.4 grams of heroin from his possession.

Further inspections revealed that the suspect had stolen money from people travelling between Ratmalana, Moratuwa, Dehiwala, Nedimala, and Bellanwila. Investigations are continuing.
