Cricketer Kusal Mendis agrees to pay Rs. 1 mn in accident case

Cricketer Balapuwaduge Kusal Gimhana Mendis, an accused in a fatal accident case, agreed to pay Rs. 1 million in cash to the wife of the victim when the case was taken up before Panadura Additional Magistrate Chandena Kalansuriya yesterday.

Sri Lankan National Cricketer Kusal Mendis in July was allegedly involved in an accident where the vehicle driven by him crashed into a 64-year old bus conductor who had been travelling to work on a bicycle. The victim, Thelge Neville Peiris, was a father of three.

Mendis, who drove away from the scene, later surrendered to Police. Mendis was released on bail a day after he was arrested.

Mendis appearing before the Court with his lawyers agreed to pay Rs. 1 million to the wife and children of the deceased. He has already paid Rs.200,000 from that amount for the funeral expenses of the deceased.

The Additional Magistrate directed to deposit the money in a savings account in favour of the victim’s two young children. The case was postponed for November 18.

In this case, the Panadura North Police had filed a ‘B’ report in the Court over reckless driving. The Police said the suspect failed to take the injured person to the Panadura Hospital. The neighbours had taken the injured to the hospital, but died before admission to the Hospital.

The AJMO of Panadura Base Hospital performed the autopsy on the body of the deceased

and submitted the Judicial Medical Report to the Court. It said the death was due to shock and haemorrhage following multiple injuries caused to the body. The report of Police investigations had been forwarded to the Attorney General.
