FFSL to conduct tourney for regional elite clubs

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka(FFSL) is to launch another football tournament similar to the recently concluded Vantage FFSL President’s Cup in due course, targeting the elite soccer clubs at Regional levels.

With the immense success in the Vantage FFSL President’s Cup, which was conducted after almost 18 months, due to various reasons and obstacles, the FFSL with a view of spreading the game in the country has decided to launch this tournament. Football, which is undoubtedly the most popular sport in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, has become a crowd puller.

In addition to these two provinces they are to conduct this tournament in Central, Southern, Sabaragamuwa and Western Provinces. The top twenty teams who played in the earlier tournament will not be considered and the next twenty teams with a mixture of Dialog Champions League Clubs as well as division one clubs will be chosen to be in the fray in this tournament.

The Vantage FFSL Presidents’ Cup was restricted only to Western Province, which the governing body experimented by taking a calculated risk to revamp the game and to scout the talent for the National squad. With the success in that tournament the FFSL with a view of promoting the game further island wide is planning to host tournaments among the popular clubs in different regions to create another platform in popularizing the sport with the public. This stipulated tournament will be completed in three stages including the first and second round leagues followed by the knockout stages.

Meanwhile, FFSL is in the process of launching their annual knockout tournament the F.A. Cup by mid-October this year. Over 950 entries have been received so far, which is the highest in Sri Lankan football history.

This tournament which is one of their prime tournaments in their annual calendar, will be played on a knock out basis island wide. The momentum will be at a high note as all participating teams will have to maintain their winning streak to qualify for the next round and to remain in the competition.

At present the FFSL is in the process of negotiation with the prospective sponsors to finalize these events.
