Rishan cricketer and coach with a proven track record

Former Tissa Central College, Kalutara first eleven cricketer, athlete, Sara Trophy Cricketer and cricket coach of Ananda Sastralaya, Matugama Rishan Sajith Silva commenced his school career at Tissa Central College, Kalutara and he is a right hand bat, medium pace bowler and a middle order batsman.

From his younger days he participated in the Inter House Sports Meets at his school and won places and he did running events, But his father had other ideas and his favourite cricketer was Roshan Mahanama. His intention was to see that his son becomes a cricketer and he handed over Rishan to the school under 15 coach Duminda Hemal and in the mean time one of his class mates Manoj Gayan encouraged him to take up to cricket. His first year in the under 15 he was able to capture ten scalps only. His first year in the under 17 Vidyalians came up to second round and he excelled and in the same year he got selected to the first eleven team and represented his Alma Mater for four successive years and played in the Big Matches and in this period they did not have One Dayers.

As an under 17 player he played in the division two Donovan Andree Tournament for Crusaders Sports Club and for Baduraliya Sports Club for six years. Then he played for Kalutara Town Club and Matugama Cricket Club in the Sara Trophy Tournament. In the mean time Surrey County of England donated cricket gear to Maggona Sports Club and one of his friends Thilanka Ranmal requested him to coach Maggona lads and he coached them free of charge.

During this period Nalin Roshan was coaching Tissa Central and he invited him to be his assistant and in 2008 Rishan was appointed as the Head Coach of Wadduwa Central and in the same year they met Kottawa Ananda in the finals and in the following year their under 17 team was promoted to division two.

Same year Chamika Sasanka of under 13 team set a record by scoring 316 runs in 98 minutes in 2009. In the same year their under 19 team came up to division two semi finals and lost to Nalanda Vidyalaya and Dilshan Chathuranga passed the magical thousand runs and claimed 78 wickets. Then Hashan Lakmal bagged 9 for 37 in their under 17 match against Matugama Ananda. He passed the coaching Level One in 2007 and in 2009 he passed the level two. Under his coaching Wadduwa Central became under 17 division two champions by beating Royal College and during this period the Master in Charge was D. A. Kenneth and the Principal was Mr. Ratugama.

He took over as Tissa Central Coach in 2011 during his coaching career in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019 Tissa Central became all island Champions in the inter central schools cricket tournament which is a record. They were the under 19 limited over division two champions and won the limited over games against their arch rivals Kalutara Vidyalaya in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 and they dismissed them for 65 runs in the 2017 Big Match. Since 2008 to date he is coaching Over 14 cricketers in the Singhalese Sports Club Cricket Academy and in School and Academy Level under his coaching his teams have won 14 championships and for the past 15 years he has produced from under 15 to test level 21 cricketers. Tissa Central clinched the under 19 Division Two Mobitel- Sunday Observer Best Team Award. Rohan Sanjaya passed the magical thousand runs and he played for Sri Lanka under 19 cricket team.

He toured Malaysia and India with under 14 teams as a coach and it was a fine exposure for him. In 2019 Kalutara District Cricket Association selected the Best Coach from the District and he was selected and its president Manoj Sanjaya presented the Trophy and this is the first ever instance in the Island that a cricket coach received a Trophy. Presently he is coaching Ananda Sastralaya, Matugama and the authorities of both schools are making every effort to work off the Big Match which was postponed due to Covid 19. He had a word of praise for Lalith de S. Wijeratne, Sadeera Wickramasinghe and Carlton Bernadus for their support and help at all times.
