Ex-LTTE cadre arrested with heroin worth Rs.1.2 million

The Puttalam Police Narcotics Bureau arrested a person possessing heroin worth Rs.1.2 million, recently. In addition to the narcotics, police had also seized two cars and motorcycles each, as well as cash worth Rs.300,000.

The suspect has been identified as a 42-year-old resident of Thil Adiya, Puttalam. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect had carried out drug-trafficking deals using rented cars.

He was apprehended on a tip-off received by the Puttalam Police Narcotics Bureau. It was revealed through interrogations that the suspect was a former member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). He is also said to have been connected to firearms deals.

The suspect was arrested by the Terrorism Investigation Unit in connection with firearms deals in 2008. Three T-56 rifles and a pistol were seized from his possession at the time and he was jailed for ten years before being released in 2018.

Investigations are continuing.
