Uda Walawe Elephant Transit Home running at a loss

It is revealed that the Uda Walawe Elephant Transit Home is running at a loss of Rs.200,000 for a day since it's closure in March due to Coronavirus pandemic. In addition to that, about 400 people who were earning by running hotels, conducting Safari tours and other related jobs, have lost their jobs as the transit home is not yet open.

There are about 55 baby elephants at the home, and officers there say that about Rs.100,000 has to be spent to supply milk for them.

The people who have lost their livelihood request the authorities to open the transit home as soon as possible.
