Hunger strike at Boossa Prison ends

Forty-five inmates at the Boossa Prison who were protesting against various demands, including an increase in allowance, have called off their strike and were taking regular meals; Commissioner-General of Prisons, Thushara Upuldeniya, said.

The protesting inmates were demanding that prison officials stop searching attorneys who were visiting them, to prevent officials from searching inmates upon returning from courts, to increase their allowance from Rs.8000 to Rs.20,000 to purchase items from the prison canteen, and to extend the time granted for telephone privileges. Some of those protesting included criminals such as 'Kanjipani Imran', 'Wele Suda', 'Dematagoda Chaminda', 'Kosgoda Tharaka', and 'Podi Lasi'.
