475kT paddy production targeted for 2020/21 Anuradhapura Maha Season

The Anuradhapura District Agriculture Committee has decided to cultivate paddy in a minimum of 122,000 hectares during the forthcoming 2020/2021 Maha Season, Anuradhapura government Agent R.M. Wanninayake told the Daily News.

In addition, the Government has approved 16 additional food crops to be cultivated in 60,000 hectares with 40,000 hectares set aside for maize cultivation, he said, adding that around 475 kilotonnes (kT) of paddy harvest is expected from the 2020/21 Maha Season.

Fertilizer Secretariat Anuradhapura Assistant Director Bandula Kumara said that nearly 35kT of fertilizer is required for the Anuradhapura District for the 2020/21 Maha Season. The Lakpohora and the Colombo Commercial companies have been requested to supply the stocks in time to the District’s Agrarian Development stores without delay.

Furthermore, with regard to the subsidized fertilizer for additional food crops, private companies, including Baurs and CIC Holdings, have started issuing the goods to dealers in the Anuradhapura District.

The Government has increased the price of fertilizer from Rs.1,000 to Rs.1,500 to balance any would-be crisis in the fertilizer market.
